Longtime Platteville High School teacher, Cheryl Schober, has been named a Herb Kohl Teacher Fellowship Award recipient. She has been recognized, along with 99 fellow teachers in the state of Wisconsin, for her leadership, hard work, and academic excellence in and outside of the classroom.
Cheryl Schober began teaching with the Platteville School District at the beginning of the 1991-92 school year starting out as a high school English teacher where she taught for 21 years. She currently serves as the High School Library Media Specialist during her 32nd year with the district. In addition, she also is the serves as the head coach of the high school speech team, musical assistant director, and full-length play assistant director.
When asking Cheryl Schober what this award means to her she responded, “To be put in the same category as all of the distinguished Herb Kohl award winners is hard to put into words; it is such an honor to even be nominated. Establishing relationships with students at all levels of achievement is what has motivated me to work hard and what has brought me to this point in my career.”
Award recipients are selected by a statewide committee composed of civic leaders and representatives of education-related associations and the program’s co-sponsors: The Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, regional Cooperative Educational Service Agencies (CESA), the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators, and the Wisconsin Homeschooling Parents Association. The Kohl Foundation award program was established by Herb Kohl, former U.S. Senator, philanthropist, and businessman. Since 1990, the foundation has awarded nearly $34 million to Wisconsin educators, principals, students, and schools.
The Herb Kohl Foundation has granted Cheryl a $6,000 fellowship and the Platteville School District a $6,000 grant to be used towards student learning and achievement. “I plan to use these funds towards upgrades to student work areas,” says Cheryl Schober. “With the upcoming facility improvements happening at the high school, I look forward to using the funds to help create new integrated learning spaces in the library.”
"Cheryl pours time, effort, and resources into getting books into the hands of students who desperately need to see themselves in what they read,” says Emily Zachary, English teacher at Platteville High School, “She advocates for students to read what inspires them. She encourages others to look beyond their own narratives and pick books that challenge the status quo."
